The Geegpay Writing and Storytelling Challenge

Welcome to the second edition of the Geegpay Creative Challenge! This month, we’re calling on wordsmiths, storytellers, and those who create entire worlds with their words. If you have what it takes, join the creative writing contest and stand a chance to win $100 dollars. 

The task: Write a 300-word short story from the prompt below.

Geegpay Writing Challenge Prompt:

Life throws us lemons, and sometimes it's hard to make lemonade out of them. Amina, a 25-year-old aspiring photographer, is struggling to make ends meet while juggling freelance gigs and caring for her ageing mother. She feels invisible, undervalued, and on the verge of giving up. But then, an unexpected encounter with a renowned artist reignites her passion and inspires her to take control of her own narrative. Write a 300-word short story from Amina's perspective, showing her journey from despair to determination. Write about the challenges she faces, the things she learns about herself and how she finds the strength to turn things around. 

Why participate?

The Geegpay Creative Challenge is more than just a contest; it's a celebration of creativity and our way of empowering freelancers and creatives. We believe in showcasing the abundant talents in Africa and supporting them in any way we can. Last month, the Geegpay Design and Frontend Challenge saw four winners walk away with $250 each. Now, for month two, our creative writing contest is challenging writers —whether you’re an aspiring author or seasoned writer. Ready, Set, Write:

The Geegpay Writing and Storytelling Challenge kicks off on Monday, February 26, 2024, and submissions end at 11:59 pm on Saturday, March 2. Winners will be announced on Thursday, March 7.

Prize Details:

• Eight winners will be chosen, each will receive a $100 credited to their Geegpay account. 
• We will work with the winners to facilitate seamless transfers.

Instructions for Writing and Submission:

1. Writing your story:

• You must be a citizen of a Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda or Nigeria to participate.
• Must be an original story that has not been published or submitted anywhere else before.
• Each story must be 300 words. With an allowance of 50 words over or under.
• Must adhere to the prompt.
• We prioritise organic content, and AI-generated entries will be disqualified.
• Plagiarism or the use of copyrighted material without proper attribution will also lead to disqualification.

2. Publishing your story:

• Share your story with us using this link.
• Also publish your story on any platform where it is accessible (Medium, Substack, Blogger, etc.).
• Share an extract of your work on your Twitter (X) page, using the hashtags - #Geegpay #GeegpayWritingChallenge

3. Submitting your entry:

• Tweet the link to your published story and include the hashtag #Geegpay #GeegpayWritingChallenge.
• Tag @Geegpay_HQ and @gbengabiyi in your tweet.

Criteria for Selection and Judging:

5 winners will be selected based on the following criteria:

1. Creativity and originality of the story.
2. Adherence to the prompt and instructions.
3. Writing quality.
4. Impact and emotional resonance.

Additionally, 3 winners will be chosen based on the engagement generated by your content, determined by the highest number of engagements for your story.

You can win either by the quality of your content or by the engagement your story receives.
