Between Tems bagging more awards, including 2 Grammys, fuel prices doing gymnastics, the Naira’s wild ride, and Ghana’s internet going out nationwide (yes, the entire country), Q1 gave us more plot twists than a Nollywood season finale.
In Kenya, Safaricom dropped new internet bundles (finally!). Meanwhile, TikTok bans came and went like exes who can’t decide what they want. And across the continent, the same Japa vs. Stay conversations, AI hype, and endless group chat debates on whether freelancing is still worth it or if everyone should just start a YouTube channel were still on.
But while the world was doing its thing, we had our heads down, building. As for us? Here’s what we were up to this past quarter at Geegpay.
We started the year by going back to the basics: listening. Every update we rolled out this quarter came directly from real conversations with users. Not what we thought would be nice to have, but what people were actually struggling with.
One of the biggest requests we kept hearing was: “Can I just pay for airtime and electricity without switching apps or converting money first?” Well, now you can. With our new Bill Payments feature, you can pay for everyday essentials such as airtime, data, electricity, and cable TV straight from your Geegpay wallet. And whether you’re holding NGN, USD, GBP, or EUR, you can use any currency to pay.
Right now, it’s live for Nigerian users. But trust us, this is just the beginning.
We also had something for the Upwork freelancers. Now, on Geegpay, it doesn’t matter if you’re cashing out your first $100 or bringing in $7,000 from a big contract; you can withdraw your Upwork earnings straight into your Geegpay account. No limits. No extra steps. Just a direct line between your work and your wallet.
When you’re working across borders, every cent counts. That’s why we reviewed our deposit fees and lowered them. Now, the USD deposit fee has dropped from 0.9% to 0.8% and is capped at $15, no matter how much you receive. With the new fees, ACH & Wire deposits also start from just $1.5. You're welcome.
Like we always do, we expanded our toolkit that supports you and your business of cross-border payment, freelancing, remote work and multicurrency transactions. This quarter, we added new resources like a ready-to-use freelance contract template, blogs on how you can send money to Kenya and Ghana from Nigeria, guides to help you decide between Geegpay vs Payoneer or Geegpay vs Wise, plus the ability to generate and share payment links even with clients who aren’t on Geegpay. The goal? Give you more control, more clarity, and fewer back-and-forths when it comes to getting that money.
In March, we hit a milestone: three years of Geegpay. That’s three years of helping freelancers, remote workers, and business owners across Africa earn in foreign currencies, spend globally, and take control of their money.
But for us, this wasn’t just an anniversary. It was a chance to pause, look back, and celebrate what we’ve built together. So we marked the moment the only way that made sense: by giving back. For 24 hours, users got free virtual cards and free USD deposits. We even threw in a little fun with an anniversary challenge to see who really knows Geegpay.
We’ve come a long way, but somehow, it still feels like we’re only getting started. That’s the beauty of building something that matters; every year just raises the bar for what’s next.
At Geegpay, building products is just one part of the story. The heart of it has always been people. And this past quarter reminded us again and again why community will always come first.
In Geegpay Diaries, we sat down with two brilliant minds whose stories left a mark.
There was Soye, a copywriter who reminded us that you don’t need a perfect roadmap to succeed, just curiosity, grit, and a willingness to begin. And Chisom, a 23-year-old game developer who went from learning online to building games for studios across the globe. Proof that with the right support, young African talent can thrive anywhere.
This quarter, we also hosted real conversations about real challenges. From navigating remote work to using AI in practical ways, we brought professionals and experts together to share insights that actually make a difference.
For IWD, we chose to go beyond the conversations to actual impact. Through the Raenest Women’s Mentorship Program, 17 women were matched with mentors who poured into their growth both personally and professionally. The impact was real, and the mentees learnt a lot. To everyone that contributed, once again, thank you.
We also hosted a powerful roundtable, Beyond Conversations: Women Leading Change, featuring voices from across tech, consulting, and freelancing. The conversation spanned insights from navigating bias in tech to leading teams to helping other women find their footing. And the stories shared were layered, real, and deeply reflective of the work still ahead.
Q1 was also a big one for visibility, growth, and momentum. Our parent company, Raenest, raised $11 million in Series A funding. It was a proud moment not just because of the number but because of what it means for our users. More growth. More products. More reach. With this, we’re stepping into new markets like the U.S. and Egypt while continuing to strengthen our presence in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.
We also took the stage at Africa Tech Summit Nairobi, where we joined leaders across the continent to tackle the real questions: How do we build financial systems Africans and the world can trust? What does it take to scale beyond borders? The energy in those rooms was electric, full of bold ideas, honest conversations, and a shared drive to move the industry forward.
Beyond the insightful discussions, one of the biggest highlights of ATS 2025 was the Raenest Mixer. This post-event gathering was the perfect opportunity to meet fellow attendees, exchange ideas, and discuss the key takeaways from the summit in a more relaxed setting.
Q1 set the tone, and Q2 is already shaping up to be even bigger. We’re working on new features, expanding into more markets, and unlocking even better ways for you to move, earn, and grow, no matter where you’re based.
