AI Smackdown: ChatGPT vs. Gemini - Who Wins the Copywriting Crown?

In November 2022, ChatGPT was released, and about four months later, Google introduced its own chatbot, Bard (now Gemini). These generative AI tools have significantly impacted students, business professionals, content creators, developers, and virtually everyone.

While writers often criticise generative AI for potentially lacking originality, encouraging plagiarism, and containing errors, there are ethical ways to use these tools. When utilised correctly, business professionals and freelancers can find them invaluable. These AI tools can automate repetitive tasks, help overcome writer's block, and assist with research. They also enhance communication and offer a cost-effective means of content creation. Ultimately, generative AI serves as a productivity booster, not a replacement for human creativity.

For this Versus, we compared the free versions of ChatGPT and Gemini, focusing on their ability to function as copywriters for promoting the Geegpay virtual dollar card on social media.

Here’s the prompt we used:

---

PROMPT:

"Geegpay is a global payment platform that lets you easily set up virtual bank accounts in USD, GBP, and EUR to effortlessly accept payments from around the world. Geegpay recently launched a virtual dollar card feature that you can use to make payments on all international sites and payment platforms. It costs only $3 to create a virtual card on Geegpay and you can create up to 3 cards instantly on the app. Geegpay also does not charge users for funding or for transacting with the virtual dollar cards.

I want you to write 10 copy options to promote the Geegpay virtual dollar card feature on social media. My target audience are freelancers, remote workers, entrepreneurs, and everyone who shops online. I want to strike an 80:20 balance of posts where 80% are engaging content about the virtual dollar cards that my audience will find interesting, and 20% promote the virtual dollar card feature.

Use this format to write the copy:

- Short and Punchy Headline copy: Attract the reader, make them stop scrolling to read the rest of the message.

- Body copy: Give a little more detail about the card or message you’re trying to pass.

- CTA: Invite the reader to create a card on Geegpay or use the card to shop.

Keep the tone friendly and conversational."

Evaluation Criteria:

1. Number of Responses Provided:

We asked the chatbots to write 10 copy options to promote the Geegpay virtual dollar card feature on social media.

ChatGPT: Delivered 10 copy options as requested.

Gemini: Offered 3 drafts with 10 copy options each, totaling 30 options.

Verdict: This depends on your perspective. Some may find too many options overwhelming, preferring an AI that provides the requested number. However, for those who prefer a wider selection, Gemini is the winner. We’re in the "you can never have too many options" camp.

2. Adherence to the Requested Format:

The format requested stated

Short and Punchy Headline copy: attract the reader, make them stop scrolling to read the rest of the message

Body copy: give a little more detail about the card or message you’re trying to pass

CTA: invite the reader to create a card on Geegpay or use the card to shop

ChatGPT:

     - Headline Copy: Ranged from 6 to 8 words. Headlines were direct but not particularly punchy.

     - Body Copy: Added more details to the headline, highlighting the USPs ‘global acceptance and no conversion fees’.

     - CTA: Clear and straightforward.

Gemini:

     - Headline Copy: Varied from 5 to 12 words. Formats were diverse and potentially scroll-stopping.

     - Body Copy: Expanded on headlines with additional USPs, such as ‘security, convenience, spend tracking, financial management, savings, and currency conversions’.

     - CTA: Longer, versatile, and could work as punchy headlines themselves.

Verdict: If you need shorter copy, especially for fixed spaces, ChatGPT might be more suitable. However, if you want content that can grab attention and provide more information, Gemini’s options could work better.

3. Adherence to the 80:20 Rule:

The request was to strike a 80:20 balance of posts where 80% are engaging content about the virtual dollar cards that my audience will find interesting, and 20% promote the virtual dollar card feature.

ChatGPT: Focused more on promoting the dollar card feature, resulting in 100% promotional content. Most headers were generic and mentioned Geegpay frequently, which was unnecessary.

Gemini: Balanced the 80:20 rule better by creating engaging content mixed with promotional posts. Used questions, emojis, and targeted the audience directly in some copies. However, some info was inaccurate (e.g., cost of card creation).

Verdict: If you prefer more direct copy, some of ChatGPT’s options could work, though they may need tweaking. Gemini’s responses were more engaging, asking questions that the audience might have, thus catching their eyes as they scroll. However, you may need to correct some inaccuracies.

4. Tone:

We asked that the AI keep the tone friendly and conversational.

ChatGPT: ChatGPT used a direct and formal tone. The response was informational and action-oriented.

Gemini: Gemini was friendlier. It used questions, emojis, and engaging CTAs. The tone felt more like a conversation rather than a directive.

Verdict: When talking to humans, you want the tone to feel less robotic. Gemini’s responses were closer to natural conversation, while ChatGPT’s were more to the point.

Final Verdict:

Both ChatGPT and Gemini can significantly speed up copywriting tasks, especially for busy freelancers and business professionals. The choice between them depends on your specific needs:

Of course, you can always tweak your prompts, check other drafts in Gemini, or regenerate responses on ChatGPT until you get better results. Even then, you might still need to tweak the responses because you know your audience best and what works for them.

Upgrading to premium versions of these tools can yield even better results. With the Geegpay virtual dollar card, you can easily pay for these upgrades and enhance your content creation process. Remember, generative AI enhances productivity but does not replace human creativity and expertise.
